NATorigin Lengthening Mascara Review

I don’t wear much makeup but I always like to use a natural mascara which defines my eyes and brings them to life. So far I’ve tried a few different natural mascaras and I am continuing to test new brands as I am curious to see whether I can find something better than what I’ve already tried.

Not long ago, I came across NATorigin Lengthening Mascara and after reading some good reviews online, I was convinced this was a great mascara which I absolutely needed to try. So I picked it recently from LoveLula as part of their Blogger Accredited Program and after trying it for a few months, now I have a better opinion about it. Continue reading to see what I liked about it and what I didn’t like.

About NATorigin

NATorigin is a natural makeup and skincare company who specialises in products for extremely sensitive eyes and skin. They are approved by Allergy UK and over the years they won several awards for their hypoallergenic green beauty products. Their mascara, in particular, got a lot of attention from the media as it won more awards than any other product in their range. The mascara has also been highly rated on various media sites, for example, Daily Mail rated this mascara 10/10 and The Independent listed it in their Top 10 Best Allergy Products in 2014.

Apart from the mascara, the rest of the NATorigin makeup range is also popular, specifically their eyeliners and lipsticks.

Most of the NATorigin range is vegan-approved but some of their products are not suitable for vegans as they contain beeswax (for example, lipstick, pencil eyeliners and their mascara). Their products are never tested on animals.

NATorigin products contain a minimum of 97% ingredients from natural sources and are free from alcohol, chrome, nickel, petrochemicals and many other synthetic ingredients.

The brand is recommended by Janey Lee Grace, an author, presenter and holistic living expert who regularly appears as a columnist in various magazines and talks on radio and TV.

NATorigin Lengthening Mascara – Review

When it comes to mascaras I always look for something that will give my lashes a good lengthening effect and at the same time, a nice volume. That’s because my eyelashes are short and barely visible. NATorigin Lengthening Mascara in black sounded like an attractive option to me as it had good user reviews and because it’s ‘lengthening’.

Natorigin mascara - brush

Although I don’t consider myself to have extremely sensitive eyes, I like that NATorigin created a mascara with special ingredients that won’t irritate the most sensitive eyes.

Ease of application

NATorigin Lengthening Mascara is easy to apply although, in the beginning, the wand felt quite long to me, but I got used to it quite quickly and it didn’t make it more difficult for me to use the mascara (other natural mascaras have shorter wands).

Brush

The brush is not too big for me (I prefer smaller brushes), I think the size of it is perfect really, not too big, not too small. I know some people prefer quite big and bulky brushes and if that’s your preference, then this mascara is probably not for you. I would say this brush is of medium size.

Volume

When applying the mascara to my eyelashes, it’s amazing how much volume I get just with one coat. Although in the beginning, it wasn’t like that as the brush wasn’t soaked with the liquid yet so I needed more than one coat to give me some nice volume. But that got better with use and now I just use one coat and this is enough for me for day time use. For the evening, I would add another coat.

The black colour is quite strong and I am happy with the pigmentation which gives my eyelashes a nice definition.

The lengthening effect

So while I am happy with the volume I get from this mascara, I am not so sure about mascara’s lengthening effect. Yes, it does lengthen the eyelashes, but the difference is not massive. I’ve used natural mascaras in the past which had better lengthening effect than this one. It’s just something to keep in mind if that’s what you are after.

The staying power

What I really love about this mascara is that it’s really durable and it has a great staying power. Throughout the day it doesn’t smudge or flake so I don’t have to worry about this and there is no need to constantly keep checking myself in the mirror. But saying that, a couple of times I did notice a bit of smudging underneath one of my eyes but that could be because I touched my face, forgetting about my makeup.

Waterproof?

I wouldn’t say this mascara is waterproof. I certainly didn’t want to test it in the rain when I was out as I didn’t want to risk getting black all over my face! When I splashed water into my face when I had this mascara on, I could see the colour coming off really easily.

How easy is it to remove?

I know some mascaras can be a nightmare to remove but not NATorigin mascara. I remove this mascara very easily using the face wash from Odylique. I don’t even have to use a makeup remover afterwards. So if you are looking for a natural mascara that would be really easy to remove, this is it!

How does NATorigin mascara compare to other natural mascaras?

The other natural mascaras that I’ve tried so far were from Green People, PHB Ethical Beauty and Jane Iredale (sample).

natural mascaras

I really liked the effect of PHB Ethical Beauty mascara – it was really volumising and lengthening too but the brush felt a little bit too big for me so it wasn’t that easy to apply.

In terms of the brush, the size of NATorigin’s brush is perfect. I like it more than the PHB’s mascara brush as it is slightly smaller (although it may not look like it on the picture, but it is, only slightly though!). But my favourite mascara brush was from Green People as it was the easiest to use for me.

natural mascaras that I've tried

Green People’s mascara is one of my favourite mascaras for several reasons:

  • It’s easy to apply
  • It has a great lengthening effect
  • It gives my eyes a good definition (although it’s not very volumising)

The only problem with Green People’s mascara was that it gave me panda eyes a few times while wearing it but this could be due to the face cream I was using that day. But I am not totally sure so while wearing it I would definitely check myself in the mirror regularly.

On the other hand, PHB’s mascara never gave me panda eyes. For this reason, this mascara is my favourite natural mascara at the moment despite a bigger brush. NATorigin’s mascara compares well to it but I felt it started to clump too soon (after about a month of use) although only slightly. For this reason, PHB Ethical Beauty’s mascara still wins.

mascara brushes

Just to mention about the clumping on the brush; I’ve learnt that this is very common and quite normal with mascaras and it’s not such a big problem, just clean the wand regularly scraping the clumps off the applicator. Just keep in mind that some mascaras clump faster than others and some don’t clump at all (or only ever so slightly). Remember, all mascaras should be replaced after about 6 months of use as this is when clumping can become more of a problem.

I wasn’t really a fan of Jane Iredale’s mascara. Its brush was too big and it didn’t give much volume to my lashes.

Here are my favourite three natural mascaras in comparison:

NATorigin Green People PHB Ethical Beauty
Medium-size brush  The thinnest brush  The biggest brush
 Not vegan  Not vegan  Vegan
98% natural ingredients  98% natural ingredients  100% naturally derived ingredients
Suitable for extremely sensitive eyes  Suitable for those prone to eczema & psoriasis  Suitable for sensitive eyes
Volumising but not so much lengthening  Lengthening but not so much volumising  Volumising and lengthening
Does not contain Phenoxyethanol  Does not contain Phenoxyethanol  Contains Phenoxyethanol

NATorigin Lengthening Mascara – The final verdict

NATorigin Lengthening Mascara is a good natural mascara and it should definitely be considered by those who have very sensitive eyes and wear contact lenses. I really like its volumising effect and its staying power but it’s not so much lengthening for me which is not that great as I have short eyelashes. However, I think this mascara would be perfect for those with longer lashes who are just after a volume.

If you like a good lengthening effect, then the mascara from Green People may be a better fit for you although it may need a few coats to build up the volume. But for an all-around mascara, you may turn to PHB Ethical Beauty Black All-In-One Mascara.
