The Natural Deodorant Co. – Clean Deodorant Balm Review

While I love Weleda’s deodorants I also love to try other brands to see how they compare. A while back I’ve noticed that many people are talking about The Natural Deodorant Company and many reviews online mention how good their deodorants are. This brand seemed to be popping everywhere so I was really pleased when I found a sample of their Clean Deodorant Balm in a discovery box from Naturisimo. Finally, I get to try this brand that everyone is raving about!

The Natural Deodorant Co. offers various scents of their Clean Deodorant Balm and I’ve received the Palmarosa & Mandarin scent. When I smell this natural deodorant directly from the pot, the scent is not very strong which makes me wonder whether there would be any scent at all once I apply it to my underarms. It’s a very subtle scent and barely there but that’s not all that important. What’s more important is: does it work?

I love the texture of this deodorant, it’s not grainy at all initially, very smooth and glides on the skin very easily. The balm is creamy and feels really moisturising.

Ingredients

Just like many other natural deodorants, the Clean Deodorant Balm from The Natural Deodorant Co. contains sodium bicarbonate which is antibacterial and provides all-day odour protection. If you are sensitive to this ingredient you may want to try their Gentle range instead which doesn’t contain it.

Clean Deodorant Balm is made with magnesium oxide and Arrowroot Flour which both help to absorb any wetness. It also has an addition of olive oil and coconut oil (both organic) which will hydrate and soothe your skin.

This is a 100% natural deodorant which doesn’t contain any nasty ingredients at all, so no aluminium, alcohol, preservatives or artificial fragrance. It also has no palm oil in it.

Clean Deodorant Balm – What I liked

What I really like about The Natural Deodorant Co. is that you can buy yourself some samples of different scents so that you can then decide which one is your favourite before committing to a bigger jar.

In terms of size, you can either get a small sample jar like the one I have (5g) or choose from bigger jars (20g or 55g). Just to mention that plastic is used for smaller jars but a big jar is totally plastic-free.

Palmarosa & Mandarin deodorant seems to work fine for me. I haven’t noticed any smell when using it on the days when out and about. But I haven’t tested it when I sweat more so I cannot say how it will perform then. For normal days, this works fine for me.

I must say, the scent is not very strong but still, the deodorant does work for me.

I can use this deodorant straight after shaving with no issues but if you have really sensitive skin you may want to wait a little bit afterwards.

Any negatives?

Some people may find that the full-size product is a little bit pricy but as very little is needed for each application, the jar will last you for a while.

It took me about a week to finish half of a small sample pot and I estimate that the sample should last you about 10-14 days, depending on how much you apply and how often. Based on my own usage, I estimate that the big jar (55g) should last you for ages and in the end, it comes out quite cost-effective.

One negative of paste deodorants like this one is that you have to use your fingers to scoop out the product (although you can also get yourself a spatula if you like) and you may take out too much at once if you are not careful.

Also, it’s recommended to wait until the balm is absorbed before wearing your clothes and that’s to make sure your clothes don’t get stained. But to be honest, I cannot be bothered waiting and I just wear my clothes as soon as I apply it. So far I’ve never had issues with staining.

After using about half of the small sample pot, I’ve noticed that the deodorant got a little bit grainy. But just a little bit. I got in touch with the company to ask them whether this is normal and how to prevent this but they haven’t replied. It could be that the texture is sensitive to heat and it will change and become a little bit grainy when the weather is warmer. This is not a big issue for me though, it’s so subtle that it’s really not a problem.

If you were wondering what the difference was between all these deodorants, Gentle Deodorant Cream is the only deodorant from the range which doesn’t contain sodium bicarbonate but the rest they do. That’s because this ingredient is anti-bacterial and deodorising and really helps to prevent the smell when you are in the gym, travelling or are extra busy (it’s great for ‘more demanding days’).

The Active Deodorant Balm and the Clean Deodorant Balm are very similar in terms of ingredients but I am guessing they use more of antibacterial ingredients in Active Deodorant Balm, to combat the smell.

The Gentle Deodorant Cream is especially suited for the most sensitive skin whilst the Clean Deodorant Balm has been created to target all skin types. The company recommends you start with this one first and then see how you get on.

The Natural Deodorant Co also has a version of a paste deodorant for men (Clean Deodorant Balm for Men) – this one contains citrus and spearmint essential oils to create a scent that men will love.
