Trilogy Organic Rosehip Oil Review

Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil

I tried Trilogy Organic Rosehip Oil for the first time many years back when I was switching to natural skincare products. At that time everybody was talking about this miracle beauty oil and its amazing effects. So I decided to try it. But I wasn’t totally impressed by it. It was a strange oil and I was not used to its texture and how it felt on the skin. I wasn’t a big fan. But later on, I realised that I didn’t really appreciate it at that time. I wasn’t aware of all the goodness and benefits it has and for me, it was just some strange face oil which didn’t do much for my skin (although as I’ve learnt later on it actually does have some proven benefits for the skin).

Fast-forward many years, I learnt that many celebrities use rosehip oil, just to mention a few here: Kate Middleton, Gwyneth Paltrow and Victoria Beckham. So it must be something good about it, I thought. Kate Middleton is a big fan of the Trilogy Organic Rosehip Oil which many people claim is a secret to her good complexion. It’s one of the reasons why I decided to come back to rosehip oil this year and pay special attention to it to see what it can do for my skin. I was mainly interested to see whether it can help to brighten my skin which is a benefit that many people mention.

Rosehip oil is in general used for the following reasons:

  • to help improve the appearance of scars
  • to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • for stretch marks

According to the independent clinical studies, Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil does work: it has been shown to improve the visible appearance of scars by 41% and stretch marks by 43% when used twice daily for 12 weeks (by 10 women).

In another study, fine lines and wrinkles improved by 23% when this oil was used over a period of 8 weeks twice daily (a study of 20 women). Although this doesn’t seem like much, it’s certainly enough to give this a try. Who wouldn’t want their fine lines and wrinkles at least slightly improved?

In 2015, there was another study investigating how rosehip seed oil can help improve the appearance of post-surgical scar tissue. In this study, Repavar® rosehip oil was used and the final results were also positive. Rosehip seed oil “showed a beneficial effect on the clinical appearance of scars, in general, compared with those who were remained to their natural evolution”. The most obvious improvement was in the redness of the skin which was probably due to the reduced inflammation in the skin (rosehip oil has anti-inflammatory properties).

Rosehip oil has a healing power to treat other skin problems as well such as dermatitis, acne, eczema, and burns.

Beneficial compounds found in rosehip oil

  • High content of essential fatty and unsaturated acids (UFAs), mainly linoleic acid, linolenic acid and oleic acid. These fatty acids are regenerative, helping to regulate skin elasticity and restore skin moisture.
  • Retinoic acid or tretinoin (a naturally-occurring acid of retinol) – in dermatology, tretinoin topical treatment is used to treat acne and photo-induced skin damage.
  • Vitamin E – a powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Polyphenols –  responsible for the antioxidant activity.
  • Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) – regenerates the skin, essential for collagen formation. It can help prevent premature ageing of the skin and helps to brighten it.
  • High level of phenolic acids – these acids have antioxidant properties and may help reduce inflammation.

Trilogy Organic Rosehip Oil Review

As mentioned at the beginning of this post, the main reason why I decided to start using rosehip oil again was to see whether it can help to brighten my skin.

As I get older, I am noticing more sunspots and for this reason, my skin is getting darker, especially on my face. I really don’t like that so I will see what’s the most effective natural treatment for this issue. Rosehip oil seems to work well for many people and that’s why I am testing it out first.

To see how well Trilogy Rosehip Oil helps to improve skin discolouration I decided to pay special attention to the back of my left hand, where I had severe burns and my skin is thinner and more susceptible to sun damage. This part of my hand has old scars and more brown spots than the right hand.

My left hand before starting to apply rosehip oil regularly

For my reference, I took some pictures of my left hand before I started using rosehip oil. I also took some pictures of my face.

As you can see in the picture, the majority of brown spots on the back of my left hand is on the right side. That’s also where the skin was the most damaged when I burnt my hand

Once I started using rosehip oil, I decided not to pay much attention to my skin and how it looks as it definitely wouldn’t make sense checking the skin every day to see whether it’s improved in its appearance. Any kind of skin transformation takes time so I decided to check for improvement maybe once a week or once every 2 weeks and then make notes as I go along.

Trilogy Rosehip Oil on my left hand

It’s been around 6 weeks now since I’ve been applying rosehip oil every day, twice a day and these are my notes on how I got on during these weeks of testing:

After 7-10 days of using Trilogy Rosehip Oil

I look at my hand and at first sight, it seems that the brown spots appear less visible and the skin is lightened. Or am I just imagining and the light is weird? There is no doubt there are still there but they are possibly slightly brighter.

It must be doing something on my face too then, was my second thought. So I go and investigate my face in detail in the mirror focusing on a bigger concentration of sunspots I have on my forehead. Nope, they are still there, still pretty visible to me. But I guess it’s still early days so I will continue with the regime… Or maybe I have to be a little bit more generous with this oil and should make sure I pay more attention to the areas that I want to brighten? Ok, I will try that and see how it goes. I will make sure that from now I focus on the most affected areas, ensuring they are well-covered with rosehip oil.

After about 3 weeks

The brown spots on my left hand haven’t disappeared but I have no doubt about the improvement. Now I am convinced this oil is really working. I can see the scar from the burn has really lightened. But looking closely I see something I haven’t seen before. There are a few small spots on the skin which appear lighter than the rest of the hand. This seems to be a scar tissue which kind of blended with the skin colour before (or wasn’t that visible) but now it’s looking much lighter than my normal skin colour, going towards white.

Wow, this stuff is actually working. Rosehip oil really has a brightening effect. That’s amazing, I think to myself, I’ve finally found something that is really worth having in my beauty cabinet.

What about my face?

I check under a good light and investigate a concentration of brown spots on my forehead. It seems that they are not going anywhere so I am slightly disappointed. Hmm, maybe I am not applying enough, I think to myself. Although I am quite sure I apply plenty. But it could be that the sun exposure I’ve had recently is ruining all my efforts although I do make sure I always wear sunscreen.

Anyway, at that moment I decided to start applying a little bit more rosehip oil on my face with each application because maybe it just needs a little more to start doing its magic (on my hand I apply 1-2 drops on a small area of skin while on my face I’ve been applying the recommended 2-3 drops. Going forward I use 4 drops on my face with any excess going on my neck/decollete).

After about 5 weeks

Just when my skin really started to improve in terms of pigmentation, I went on holiday. This, of course, meant lots of sun exposure. For 2 weeks.

During my holiday, I was using sunscreen regularly, applying like crazy throughout the day in temperatures 22-32 degrees celsius but that didn’t help to prevent sunspots at all. I was also applying rosehip oil twice a day but that didn’t help. Despite all my efforts, I’ve noticed more sun spots on the back of my left hand and the existing ones were more visible. Not to mention my face.

A big sigh. I was back on square one, actually, minus one. The pigmentation looked worse than when I first started applying rosehip oil. It’s just really annoying that my skin reacts that way but it seems that it’s really nothing I can do about it. Trilogy Rosehip Oil certainly doesn’t prevent sunspots (from my experience) but it does help to lighten them to some extent when using it regularly. But at the same time, you really have to limit your sun exposure, if you want to see any difference.

Even my face got darker from sunspots but nevertheless, I will continue using rosehip oil as it does help a little bit with the pigmentation based on my experience so far. But I think I haven’t really used it for long enough to see a big difference.

On a positive side, since I’ve been using Trilogy Organic Rosehip Oil, my skin has been in really good condition overall. I’ve been experiencing fewer breakouts, I had no dryness and my fine lines have softened a little bit. I think rosehip oil really helps to keep skin hydrated and also works on my fine lines, which is great news!

It’s worth keeping in mind that there are many benefits of using rosehip oil, not only skin brightening effect so I really think it’s worth including in your daily skincare routine. I just wish all the positive effects would come faster, not after 6-12 weeks.

I will be checking some other natural skin brighteners as well to see whether I could use them in combination with rosehip oil to get better results.

Trilogy Rosehip Oil – Pros

  • ‘dry’ oil, really quick to absorb
  • lightweight and non-greasy
  • can be used underneath your makeup
  • certified organic and cold-pressed
  • proven to work in independent clinical studies
  • helps to nourish and moisturise the skin

Trilogy Rosehip Oil – Cons

  • may take a long time before you see any improvement on your skin
  • not a fan of the scent but you can get used to it

All in all, I don’t think you can go wrong by including rosehip oil in your skincare routine. That’s because of its beneficial properties and skin healing powers which have been proven by several studies. Rosehip oil is also an extremely versatile oil that can be used for many different purposes: for scars, to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, to brighten the skin and to prevent premature skin ageing. This highly anti-inflammatory oil may even be able to help with rosacea, psoriasis, eczema and dermatitis.

What’s more, rosehip oil is suitable for all skin types and won’t clog the pores and cause breakouts. It actually helps with acne so if you suffer from that, definitely give it a try.

Keep in mind that it may take some time before you see some satisfactory results after using rosehip oil but this should not put you off as many skincare products take some time to work, not just rosehip oil.

    1. So good to hear that! Going forward I will test some other rosehip oil brands to see how they all compare.
