Is Lucozade Good or Bad for You?

Recently updated on March 14th, 2026 at 3:49 pm

Lucozade is one of those drinks many people know well, whether it is the original fizzy Lucozade Energy, Lucozade Sport for exercise, or one of the lower-sugar options. But just because it is popular does not automatically make it healthy.

So, is Lucozade good for you, or is it something you are better off limiting?

The answer depends on which Lucozade you mean and when you are drinking it. Some versions may be useful in specific situations, such as longer or harder exercise, but that does not make the whole range a healthy everyday choice.

The Short Answer

Lucozade is not the best everyday drink. Some versions, especially Lucozade Sport, can be useful during prolonged exercise because they provide carbohydrates and electrolytes. But regular Lucozade drinks still contain a fair amount of sugar, and even Lucozade Zero is better seen as a lower-sugar soft drink rather than a health drink. For everyday hydration, water is the better choice.

So, what’s really in Lucozade?

The basic composition of Lucozade Energy Original is based on carbonated water and glucose syrup. It also contains acids, flavourings, caffeine, sweeteners, preservatives, colouring and added vitamin B3. In other words, it is a fizzy soft drink with sugar, sweeteners and caffeine rather than a simple glucose drink.

Lucozade Sport, on the other hand, is an isotonic drink, which means it is designed to be absorbed quickly. It is made with water rather than carbonated water, does not contain caffeine, and is designed to provide carbohydrates and electrolytes during exercise.

Lucozade Original vs Lucozade Sport: Ingredients

Here’s a side-by-side look at the ingredients in Lucozade Energy Original and Lucozade Sport Orange.

Key takeaways:

  • Both contain glucose syrup, so both provide sugar.
  • Both contain artificial sweeteners but not the same ones.
  • Both contain preservatives, flavourings and vitamin B3.
  • Lucozade Original is fizzy, while Lucozade Sport Orange is not
  • Lucozade Sport Orange is made for exercise, with carbohydrates and electrolytes, while Lucozade Original is more of a fizzy energy soft drink.

Note: Lucozade Energy Orange is also a very common version, but its ingredient list is slightly different from Lucozade Original. For example, it includes orange juice from concentrate and uses sodium gluconate (acidity regulator)  rather than sodium citrate.

What about Lucozade Zero?

If you want a lower-sugar option, Lucozade Zero is the obvious one. It has zero sugar and very few calories, but it is still a processed fizzy drink with sweeteners, caffeine, flavourings and additives. Lucozade says Lucozade Zero Original contains 1.7 calories per 100ml.

Lucozade Energy Zero

The current ingredient list for Lucozade Zero Original includes carbonated water, acids, acidity regulators, flavourings, preservative, sweeteners, caffeine, antioxidant, colours and vitamin B3. Unlike regular Lucozade Original, it does not contain glucose syrup, which is why the sugar and calorie content are much lower.

That said, I still would not call it a health drink. It may be a better choice than regular Lucozade if you want to avoid sugar, but it is best seen as a lowersugar soft drink, not something especially healthy.

The nutritional value of Lucozade

If you look at the current nutrition panels, Lucozade Original is higher in calories, carbs and sugar than Lucozade Sport Orange. Both contain niacin (vitamin B3), but Lucozade Sport Orange also provides sodium as an electrolyte.

Here’s a quick side-by-side look at the nutritional values per 100ml:

How much sugar is in Lucozade?

There is 22.5g of sugar, or about 5.6 teaspoons, in a 500ml bottle of Lucozade Original. Lucozade Sport Orange contains slightly less at 17.5g of sugar, or about 4.4 teaspoons, in a standard bottle. The recommended serving size is 250ml, but realistically most people will drink much more than that once they open a bottle.

Here’s how the sugar content changes depending on how much you drink.

Serving sizeLucozade OriginalLucozade Sport Orange
100ml4.5g (1.1 tsp)3.5g (0.9 tsp)
250ml serving11.2g (2.8 tsp)8.8g (2.2 tsp)
500ml bottle22.5g (5.6 tsp)17.5g (4.4 tsp)

For context, the NHS says adults should have no more than 30g of free sugars a day. So if you drink a full bottle of Lucozade Original, you are already getting close to that limit in one go. Even Lucozade Sport Orange still gives you a fairly large amount.

If you want less sugar, Lucozade Zero is the lower-sugar option, but I still would not call it healthy. It is better seen as a lower-sugar soft drink rather than a good everyday choice, especially as WHO advises against relying on non-sugar sweeteners for long-term weight control.

How many calories are in Lucozade?

A 500ml bottle of Lucozade Original contains about 185 calories, while a 500ml bottle of Lucozade Sport Orange contains about 135 calories.

That is not extremely high, but it is still worth keeping in mind, especially when those calories come mainly from carbohydrates and sugar rather than anything particularly filling or nutritious.

Do Lucozade drinks offer any health benefits?

Not really in the way people usually mean when they ask if a drink is “good for you”. Lucozade Original is still basically a sugary fizzy drink with caffeine, so I would not call it a health drink just because it contains some added niacin (vitamin B3). Niacin does help the body release energy from food, but that does not make Lucozade especially nutritious.

Where Lucozade can be useful is around exercise. Lucozade Sport is an isotonic drink, which means it is designed to be absorbed quickly. Lucozade says it contains carbohydrates and electrolytes at levels appropriate for exercising adults, which is why it can make more sense during longer or harder exercise than regular Lucozade.

That said, I still would not see that as a major health benefit for most people. It is more of a practical benefit in a specific situation. If you are not exercising, water is still the better everyday choice, and the NHS says water is the best way to replace lost fluids.

So, should you drink Lucozade?

Lucozade is not the best everyday drink. Lucozade Original is high in sugar and is closer to a fizzy soft drink than something healthy. Lucozade Sport makes more sense during longer or more intense exercise because it contains carbohydrates and electrolytes, but even then, it is not something most people need every day.

So overall, I would see Lucozade as a drink that may have a use in certain situations, rather than something that is generally good for you. For everyday hydration, water is still the better choice.

FAQs

Is drinking Lucozade every day bad for you?

Yes, it can be. Drinking Lucozade every day can push your sugar intake too high, which is not good for your teeth, your weight or your overall health.

Is Lucozade ever good for you?

Sometimes, yes. Lucozade Sport can be useful during longer or harder exercise because it provides carbohydrates and electrolytes, but for everyday drinking I would not call Lucozade healthy.

Is Lucozade Zero better for you?

Only in one sense. It is lower in sugar and calories than regular Lucozade, but that does not make it healthy. It is still a processed fizzy drink, and for everyday hydration, water is still the better choice.

Is Lucozade good when you’re ill?

Not really. Lucozade Sport does contain carbohydrates and some sodium, which can sound helpful, but it is designed for exercise, not for treating illness. If you’re unwell, water is usually the best choice, and if you have vomiting or diarrhoea, an oral rehydration solution is better because it is made to replace the fluid, salts and minerals your body has lost. Lucozade Sport still does not contain enough salt in the right balance to replace a proper rehydration solution.

Can you drink Lucozade during pregnancy?

Yes, but in moderation. Lucozade says Lucozade Sport is safe during pregnancy, and it also says Lucozade Energy contains about 12mg of caffeine per 100ml. The NHS recommends keeping caffeine intake to no more than 200mg a day during pregnancy, so the main thing is to watch your total caffeine intake and not overdo sugary drinks.

Can Lucozade upset your stomach?

It can in some people. The NHS says fizzy drinks can trigger bloating and heartburn, and caffeinated drinks can increase stomach acid. That means Lucozade Original is more likely to bother a sensitive stomach than Lucozade Sport, which is not fizzy and does not contain caffeine. If you already struggle with reflux, heartburn or digestive symptoms, Lucozade may not be the best choice.

Is Lucozade suitable for vegans?

Yes. Lucozade says its drinks are suitable for vegetarian and vegan diets and that it does not use animal-derived ingredients in the drinks or during the manufacturing process.

Is Lucozade fattening?

It can contribute to weight gain if you drink it often, simply because it adds extra calories and sugar without being very filling. A 500ml bottle of Lucozade Original provides about 185 calories, while Lucozade Sport Orange provides about 135 calories. On its own that is not extreme, but it can add up quickly if you drink it regularly on top of your usual diet
