The personal training industry is huge and there’s no sign of it slowing down. Odds are you know someone who either works full-time or part-time as a personal trainer. If you want to get in on the action, consider the following six qualities that make good personal trainers.

A Good Personal Trainer Should Have A Resume

Having a personal trainer resume is important. Not only will it show potential clients what you can do as a personal trainer, but it also shows some personal attributes as well as the personal qualities that make a good personal trainer.

A personal training resume should not be overly fussy or complicated but should give the reader an understanding of who you are and what you can do. A personal trainer should be able to set and reach personal goals, as well as help their client/s meet personal goals.

Having a personal trainer resume that reflects this, is a sign of a personal trainer who has strong personal qualities and attributes. Knowing what one can achieve with assistance from someone else shows personal drive and motivation characteristics that personal trainers need to show.

A Good Personal Trainer Should Be Able To Motivate Others

Personal trainers work in the fitness industry, which means they must stay active and in shape at all times. It is important to show people you wish to be a part of this health-conscious culture that you are constantly working out yourself. So you have to keep motivating yourself.

You should be able to motivate yourself first before motivating others, but if you can’t motivate yourself, how are you supposed to help your clients?

You need to be able to get yourself up in the morning when you don’t want to go to the gym, and you need to motivate yourself during those long cardio sessions.

Not only do you have to motivate yourself but you also have to be able to motivate your clients as well, no matter how difficult they are or how long they’ve been sitting on the couch, you have to motivate them to see results and carry on.

A Good Personal Trainer Should Have Strong Interpersonal Skills

By nature, personal training is an interpersonal job so having strong communication skills will help you relate to your clients better. You’ll be able to teach them how to lift weights correctly or how they should do a specific exercise, or you’ll be able to talk to them about their dietary habits.

Having good interpersonal skills is critical for personal trainers because it’s all about interacting with your clients and getting them results. When you can communicate effectively with your clients then you’re likely to get results that are more effective as well.

You’ll be expected to teach your clients the correct way to use exercise equipment and how to do different exercises, so you need to communicate with them and be able to explain things clearly and concisely. Being a great trainer is about more than knowing how to lift weights. You need to have great communication skills, so being able to interact with your clients is critical.

A Good Personal Trainer Should Be Able To Keep A Client’s Interest

You have to keep a client interested in their program and you have to be able to do it for as long as they’re with you. You need to be able to keep your clients interested in their workout programs because, without interest, they won’t continue going.

Interesting workouts are the key to success with your clients and if you can keep their interest, then you’re likely going to be able to help them see results. Personal trainers need to have a positive attitude and make their clients feel comfortable during personal training sessions if you are unable to do this it will be difficult for you to find success as a personal trainer.

A Good Personal Trainer Should Have Knowledge Of Different Types Of Exercises And Machines

Knowing different types of exercises like weight training exercises or cardio exercises is critical because it’s something that personal trainers handle daily. If you don’t know about training then how are you going to help your clients?. You should be well versed in many different types of exercises and machines such as cardio exercise, P90X, ellipticals, etc.

Nowadays there’s so much different equipment out there that it’s difficult to stay current on everything, but you should at least be well versed in the machines and exercises that you’ll be working with.

Also, as new personal training equipment and personal training technology are constantly coming out, trainers need to stay up-to-date with current technologies.

A Good Personal Trainer Should Be Willing To Help Others

The best personal trainers enjoy helping others because it’s something that motivates them to get out of bed each morning and go train their clients. This is not something you should take lightly because it’s the most important trait of them all.

Even though some people may not always enjoy working out, they want to at least get in shape so you need to be willing to help and motivate them. If you do not have this mindset then you can’t last long as a personal trainer.

As you can see, if you want to be a successful personal trainer then you need to have certain qualities and traits that are critical for success. If you don’t have these qualities then it will be difficult for you to become successful.

Personal trainers who can communicate effectively with their clients, keep their clients interested in their workouts, and are well versed in different types of exercises and machines, will be able to help their clients reach their health and fitness goals.

By understanding the qualities that make a good personal trainer you should have a better idea if this is something you want to do because it’s not something everyone can do successfully.
