The Skinny Food Co Review

When I first came across The Skinny Food Co I was intrigued. Their focus is on selling low-calorie and low-sugar foods that will fit well within your diet, whether it’s low-fat, low-carb, keto or vegan, their offerings will be able to match your needs. They even sell gluten-free and diabetic-friendly products, if this is of importance to you.

In their range, you will find a variety of low-calorie sauces, syrups, low sugar spreads and much more.

All that sounded really good to me so I decided to try some of their products as I thought they could be a good addition to my diet.

I was a little bit sceptical though. Was this too good to be true? I can still have some really nice foods but without all those extra calories and without feeling guilty? Well, I wasn’t sure what to expect but I was really curious so I bought their chocolate spread, ketchup and mayo, to see whether there are any good.

In this honest review, you will find out whether I liked any of these products and whether I recommend this brand in general.

Skinny Food Co Chocolate Spread review

The first product from The Skinny Food Co that I’ve tried was their chocolate or so-called Chocaholic spread and it actually wasn’t too bad.

When I first opened a jar of Skinny Food Co Chocolate Spread it was very strange to me that it smelled of mint and also tasted of mint! Then I realised I’d ordered the mint-flavoured chocolate spread by mistake! I am not a fan of mints in chocolate but the mint flavour in this chocolate spread is not too strong and I can easily eat it.

Skinny Food Co - Chocaholic spread

The texture is thick and smooth and feels just like any other chocolate spread. It feels satisfying in the mouth since it still contains various fats (it’s not low-fat).

The sweetness is perfect, it’s not too sweet, just enough. I cannot actually tell it contains artificial sweetener maltitol as the sweetness is the same to me, just like any sugary food. It doesn’t taste too sweet though and it also doesn’t come with any aftertaste.

The biggest advantages of eating the Skinny Food Co Chocaholic Spread are:

  • It contains no palm oil
  • Low in sugar (92% less sugar than other standard chocolate flavoured spreads)
  • Low calories

This spread is not totally sugar-free as it still contains naturally occurring sugars that are found in milk (it contains whole milk powder).

Here is a full list of ingredients for your reference:

Sweetener: maltitol, vegetable oils (shea, rapeseed), whole MILK powder, fat -reduced cocoa powder 5.3%(cocoa, acidity regulators: potassium carbonate, potassium hydroxide), skimmed MILK powder, corn starch, emulsifier: lecithins (sunflower), flavourings. Product may contain NUTS, SOY, and cereals containing GLUTEN. Contains naturally occurring sugars.

Skinny Food Co Original Mayo review

The mayonnaise from the Skinny Food Co was a disappointment for me, unfortunately. I totally understand that it’s hard to make a good tasting mayonnaise that is fat-free and sugar-free at the same time and not only that, with almost no calories!

The Skinny Food Co - Skinny Sauce virtually zero Original Mayo

This mayonnaise has no eggs in it which I guess would add some nice flavour and texture and it also has no sugar, but it’s sweetened with artificial sweetener sucralose.

It is vegan, gluten-free and is suitable for the keto diet and diabetics. This is all positive but I just don’t like it.

The consistency is very thin and nothing like a typical thick and creamy mayonnaise. The taste is too sweet for my liking and I feel there is too much sucralose in it. It tastes a bit artificial and the smell is not nice either.

This only works for me when I mix it with other strong flavours, for example in a tuna salad or on a burger. I could never eat it with chips though, it is just not enjoyable.

If you are really desperate to try an almost zero calories mayonnaise, go ahead, try it but I cannot personally recommend it as I don’t like it. For now, I will stick with lighter versions of a standard mayo.

Here is a full list of its ingredients for your reference:

Water, Salt, Thickeners (Guar Gum, Xanthan Gum), Acid (Acetic Acid, Lactic Acid), Flavouring, Colours (Titanium Dioxide, Caramel), Preservatives (Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate), Sweetener (Sucralose)

Skinny Food Co Ketchup review

After the disappointment with the Skinny Food Mayo, I was really hoping that at least their ketchup will be slightly better, but no, not really. This was a disappointment as well.

The Skinny Food Co Tomato Ketchup (virtually zero)

Although the ketchup is not as runny as the mayo, the taste is equally not nice. It’s sickly sweet and tastes artificial. I just cannot stomach it although with each try I am hoping that I will get used to it. But I can’t. It’s just horrible and I don’t enjoy it so I will have to throw it away, unfortunately.

The good points about it are:

  • it’s gluten-free
  • fat-free
  • dairy-free
  • diabetic-friendly
  • vegan-friendly
  • has no added sugar (only naturally occuring sugars)
  • it has only 3kcal per 10ml serving

I can see how the Skinny Food Co. tried to cater for all the different dietary requirements but I would be surprised if somebody tells me they like the taste of this ketchup.

Here is a complete list of its ingredients:

Water, Tomato Paste (10%), Thickeners (Citrus Fibre, Xanthan Gum), Salt, Acid (Citric Acid, Acetic Acid), Favouring, Paprika, Sweetener (Sucralose) Preservatives (Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate), Colour (Caramel).

FAQs

Is Skinny Food Co good or bad for you?

If you are trying to lose weight and are looking to replace some of the high-calorie foods you are currently consuming with low-calorie alternatives, The Skinny Food Co may be able to help you achieve your goal. However, you need to be aware of some of the ingredients the brand uses to make its products sugar-free and low in calories as these may have a negative impact on your health.

Be sure that whatever you are eating will not have a negative impact on your gut microbiome. It’s very important not to disrupt the balance of good and bad bacteria in your gut as this will affect your immune system and health in general.
